Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that a specialist inserts surgically into your jawbone. The jawbone regrows around the implant, holding it in place as securely as it would a real tooth root.

Dental implants form a support structure for artificial teeth, enabling your specialist to replace missing teeth with near-perfect copies.

The artificial tooth fixes onto the dental implant, matching your remaining teeth for a natural appearance. The result is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth.

Can anyone have a dental implant?

Dental implants are an appropriate treatment option for anyone who is generally healthy, as long as they have strong jawbones and healthy gums. Implants offer several advantages, including:

  • A sparkling smile that improves your confidence
  • Ability to eat properly and speak more clearly
  • A comfortable mouth feel
  • Less chance of dental health problems developing

Providing you are fit and well, and you have your procedure performed by a specialist, dental implants are a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing, and practical answer to replacing missing teeth.

How long does it take to complete the dental implant process?

The implant process consists of two stages, with a period of healing in between:

Stage 1

The dental implant specialist assesses the density of your jawbone and the location of nerves and blood vessels prior to surgery using 3D imaging, so they can select the perfect position for the implant. When you attend for the implant surgery, your specialist injects a local anesthetic to numb your jaw and ensure you feel no pain.

The dental implant specialist then inserts the implant into the bone using an advanced computer guidance system. Using this state-of-the-art technology allows your specialist to insert the implant through the gum instead of underneath the tissue, which preserves the gums and facilitates quicker healing. A single implant procedure could take just an hour to complete.

You must follow a soft-food and liquid diet while the implant heals, then it’s a matter of waiting for the bone to grow around the implant over the next couple of months. Bone regrowth is a process called osseointegration, which means that the implant becomes embedded within the jaw.

Stage 2

Once the osseointegration process is sufficiently advanced, your specialist attaches an abutment, which is a small connecting post, onto the main implant. Your new tooth is held in place by the abutment, and the specialist checks the positioning and match of the tooth to ensure it fits perfectly.

If you’re missing a tooth, don’t let it stop you from enjoying your life. Discuss your options with Dr. Chang by calling Hayward Dentistry today, or booking an appointment online.
